Abstract

A randomly selected sample of students from the University of Alberta was interviewed regarding their parental status and child-care practices, needs and opinions. It was found that 28 per cent of graduate students and 8.6 per cent of undergraduate students were parents, with approximately one-third of students' children being 2 years of age or less. Spousal care and non-university-affiliated day care were the most common child-care arrangements. Approximately 10 per cent of student-parents were dissatisfied with their child-care arrangements. One-third to one-half of student-parents reported that they required additional hours of child care. One-third to two-thirds of student-parents reported that their academic programmes had suffered because of a lack or inadequacy of child care.
