The hydroxylysine: hydroxyproline ratio in basement membrane was 0.42 compared with 0.07 in collagen. Carbohydrate makes up approximately 10% of basement membrane by weight, while collagen contains 0.6% carbohydrate. Basement membrane was solubilized by reduction of disulfide bonds in 8 M urea followed by alkylation. The amino acid and carbohydrate composition of the soluble fraction was similar to that of intact basement membrane. The presence of two protein components,... This content is PDF only.
