Abstract

Abstract The Charles C. Lewis Collection of Aeronautica was sold at public auction at Christie's East, New York City, on 20 September, 1983. This impressive collection of books, photographs and memorabilia was the collection of Larry D. Lewis, President of the Charles C. Lewis Steel Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1971 until his death in March 1983. The collection then passed to his son, Charles C. Lewis III, the third generation to be President of the company. His grandfather, Charles C. Lewis I, founded the company in 1886. Mr. Larry D. Lewis began the collection as a child, however, the bulk of the acquisitions were added during the 1960s. Consistent with his interest in aviation, he served as a commissioned officer in the US Air Force from 1952 to 1954.
