Abstract
The Pd L 3 X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of several Pd compounds has been measured, and the chemical shift of the white line is clearly observed. This is contrary to the results that we obtained in the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurement of the Pd Lα line [Spectrochim. Acta Part B 59 (2004) 93]. The binding energy of the core electron of Pd is affected by the chemical environment and becomes different, but this difference is smeared out by the relaxation effect (charge transfer), which causes the binding energy becomes similar again. Because the charge transfer happens after the XANES procedure and before the XRF procedure, the chemical shift is recorded in the XANES spectra, but not in the XRF spectra.
