Abstract

An approximate calculation is carried out to determine several properties of 90° and 180° domain walls in thin single-crystal foils of iron. The foils are assumed to have the (100) plane parallel to their surfaces. The surface energy and width of 180° Bloch and Néel walls is found as a function of foil thickness. The character of a 90° wall is described by considering the angle between the normal to the plane of the foil and the magnetization direction at the centre of the wall (ψ0). The surface energies and widths of 90° Bloch (ψ0=45°) and Néel (ψ0=90°) walls and of walls with values of ψ0 between these are determined as a function of the foil thickness. Comparison is made between the limiting values of wall energy obtained from these calculations and those obtained by other workers. Also the values of wall width are compared with those which have been reported experimentally.
