Abstract

This week's cover story on salaries and employment confirms what many of us have felt in our guts for quite some time: The employment situation for chemists is not improving—despite a few bright spots in hiring at selected firms. Nothing that has happened since March 1, when the American Chemical Society conducted its annual salary and employment survey of members—and nothing that's projected to happen in the next few months, especially in the chemical industry—is likely to alter this outlook. How bad is it? The survey (see page 10) reveals that the percentage of chemists who are jobless but still seeking employment, 3.1%, is the highest in 24 years. But perhaps even more worrisome is that the percentage of those responding to the survey this year who are without full-time jobs is slightly more than 12%—more than twice what it was just six years ago.
