Abstract

T he Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) is a comprehensive hospital and medical benefits program under which dental care is available on a limited basis. Eligible beneficiaries include dependents of service members on active duty, retired service members and their dependents, and dependents of deceased active duty and retired service members. Active duty members of the United States Armed Forces are not, themselves eligible for CHAMPUS benefits. CHAMPUS benefits are provided under two separate and distinct programs -the CHAMPUS Basic Program and the CHAMPUS Program for the Handicapped. Orthodontic care is generally covered under the CHAMPUS Program for the Handicapped which is limited to dependents of active duty members only, although there is limited orthodontic care available under the CHAMPUS Basic Program which is available to all categories of beneficiaries.
