Abstract

The EONS (European Oncology Nursing Society) supports the development of cancer nursing as a specialty and continuing education in order to provide high-quality care to cancer patients and their families. Changing demographics means that the number of comorbidities also increases, which requires increasing knowledge for nurses providing care. In addition, advances in treatment (e.g. targeted radiotherapy which results in increased tissue sparing) and new (accelerated) surgical techniques mean shorter hospital stays; thus, more cancer nurses will be needed in the community and they will need further education concerning advanced disease. EONS supports continued education, nursing research and, activities on a pan-European level, including joint meetings, increasing activities in new member countries, and improved communication. In supporting these activities, EONS promotes education, support and empowerment for approximately 22,000 cancer nurses in 29 countries in the ever-changing field of cancer nursing.
