Abstract

Michael Ernest Sadler was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, on July 3rd, 1861. He was at school in Winchester (1871-75) and at Rugby (1875-80) and he entered Trinity College, Oxford, with a Classical Scholarship in 1880, where he gained a First in Honour Mods in 1882, and a First in Greats in 1884. He became Secretary of the University Extension Lectures Sub-Committee in 1885, and in 1892 he became Secretary of the Delegacy for the Extension of Teaching beyond the Limits of the University. In 1894-95 he was a member of the Bryce Commission on Secondary Education. From 1895-1903 he was Director of the Office of Special Inquiries and Reports. In 1903 he was appointed part-time Professor in the History and Administration of Education in the University of Manchester. From 1911-1923 he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, and from October 1917 to April 1919 he served as Chairman of the Calcutta University Commission in India, for which he was created K.C.S.I. in June 1919. In 1923 he was installed Master of University College, Oxford, from which he retired in September 1934. He died at Headington, Oxford, on October 14th, 1943.
