Abstract
제1차 세계대전 중 유일하게 항공모함을 운용했고 강력한 해군항공력을 보유했던 영국해군은 전간기에 역시 항공모함과 해군항공을 발전시킬 것을 계획했다. 영국해군은 미해군과 일본해군과 마찬가지로 항공모함의 진정한 가치를 이해하지 못했다. 양차대전 사이 영국 항공모함 발전은 전간기 전략적, 경제적, 조직적 제약 요인들로 인해 크게 위축됐으며, 그 결과 제2차 세계대전 직전에 이르러 영국 항공모함전력은 경쟁자들에 비해 뒤쳐지게 된다. 제2차 대전 기간 중 항공모함의 잠재력을 이해하고 목격한 영국해군은 그들의 전략적 현실을 반영한 접근을 토대로 항공모함을 계획하고 생산했다. 본 연구의 목적은 전간기 및 전시 영국해군의 항공모함 발전 및 항공모함 운용의 양태를 고찰하고 영국의 항공모함 발전이 가지는 함의를 알아보는 것이다.
