Abstract

The author challenges the utility of the dual career ladder, i.e. managerial or technical career options, for IS (information systems) personnel by exploring how well it fits their career needs. On the basis of data collected from two major banks. IS personnel are found to possess a diversity of career orientations. Further analysis suggests that the dual career ladder only partially satisfies the variety of career needs of IS personnel. Serious questions regarding the effectiveness of the technical career ladder, in particular, are raised. Potential problems with the technical path are cited, and recommendations for IS managers are made. >
