Abstract
This paper describes the results of an investigation into the carbonation of high alumina cement set pastes both by means of carbon dioxide in water and also by means of alkali carbonate solutions. The rates of penetration of carbonation into cylinders is greatest for the strongest (0.1M) solution of sodium carbonate but porosity and not carbonate concentration appears to be the controlling factor. Thus penetration rate increases with water/cement ratio; also cylinders cured at 40 °C showed a higher rate of penetration than those cured at 20 °C.
