Abstract

In recent smart grid systems, the energy storage system (ESS) is known as a core technology. The Korean government faces an emergency. It must ensure reserve power because of the shortage of power in summer season. In 2013, the government began the AMI and ESS deployment projects to solve the problem of power shortage, allotting them a budget of 19.9 billion. ESS includes power management systems (PMS), power conditioning systems (PCS), battery management systems (BMS) and rechargeable battery systems. Among them, BMSs are core technology and are being developed globally. Therefore, we developed the BMS platform, based on a digital signal processing (DSP) platform, which is a Master-Slave structure. We adopted CAN communication technology between the Master and Slave. The system is easily used to develop a new state of charge (SOC) and cell balancing technique. An interface that is able to communicate with other BMSs was added. Future research will continue the development of state of health (SOH) using the AC impedance method and the study of increased precision.
