Abstract

In recent smart grid system of smart grid, ESS (Energy Storage System) is known as a core technology. Furthermore, because of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident in Japan and the 9.15 power outages in Korea in 2011 resulting in a lack of reserve power, development, demonstration and deployment of ESS are very popular in the world. Specially, Korea Ministry of Knowledge Economy has published K-ESS2020, which targets to be the Top 3 industrial countries of ESS and with a 30% global market share in the near future. In ESS, there are PMS (Power Management System), PCS (Power Conditioning System), BMS (Battery Management System) and Rechargeable Battery. Among them, BMS is the core technology and is being actively being developed in the world. Therefore, in this paper, we developed the BMS platform based on DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Platform which is a Master-Slave structure. We adopted CAN communication technology between Master and Slave. This system allows for easier controllability and expandability. We also developed advanced SOC estimation and Cell Balancing function in our system.
