Abstract

To some observers Cambodia gives the impression of being an island of continuous political unity and stability1 in a sea of subversion. Its head of state, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, is normally depicted as a beloved leader receiving the devout adoration of a dominantly Buddhist people. Within the country this vision is encouraged by the government-sponsored press and the Ministry of Information, which is kept busy issuing eulogistic publications in French and English. And yet, all is not well inside Cambodia. Lately Sihanouk has expressed certain anxieties which are an indication of a malaise within the community.
