Abstract
R-matrix and distorted-wave calculations are carried out for photoionization for the Be-like ions Be I - Fe XXIII at high energies. Both methods include the inner-shell excitation process; in the R-matrix calculations these give rise to autoionizing resonances just below threshold for the onset of excitation from inner shells. Differences in the background cross section apparent for neutral Be become much less significant for the ionized species. The new calculations form a benchmarking exercise prior to upgrading the Opacity Project `TOPBASE' database for high energies.
