Abstract
The sequencing of the bacteria Xyllela fastidiosa, a plant pathogen that causes a serious disease in orange trees, is considered as a very successful project that was financially supported by Fundaçào de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), and developed by research institutes and universities of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Conducted through a network structure, the São Paulo Genome Project, as the project is usually known, is being used as an example to demonstrate a new model to develop scientific and technological researches. The main objective of this article is to describe how the project was conceived and developed, pointing out the aspects considered as relevant for its success. An additional question also considered in the text is a discussion concerning the generalisation that is being done for the network model, which is being considered adequate to any type of scientific and technological research.
