Abstract

At the end of 2022, the Freshwater Fisheries Branch of VNIRO (VNIIPRH), a Russian research institute in the field of freshwater aquaculture, fisheries and conservation of introductory biological resources, celebrated its 90th anniversary. The main objective of the Institute is to develop scientific support for freshwater aquaculture. The Institute of Pond Fisheries, among other branch institutes of Glavryba, was deployed on the basis of the Central Research Institute of Fisheries (TSNIIRH). The activities of VNIIPRH during this period were focused on the development of fish-breeding and technical standards necessary for the design, construction and operation of pond farms. Standard designs of hydraulic structures of fish ponds, their optimal sizes and water supply, norms of planting fish in rearing and feeding ponds were developed. In 2018, in order to fulfill the Order of Rosrybolovstvo dated August 10, 2018 No. 537 “On reorganization measures pursuant to the Order of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation dated July 23, 2018 No. 322” on January 16, 2019, FGBNU “VNIIPRH” was reorganized by joining FGBNU “VNIRO”. Modern research of VNIIPRH is devoted to various aspects of commercial aquaculture and artificial reproduction of valuable fish species, conservation of their biodiversity, assessment of the ecological situation of fishery reservoirs. Much attention is paid primarily to carp and sturgeon fish, for which methods are being developed for the formation and operation of domesticated breeding herds, ensuring the preservation of their genetic diversity and increasing the efficiency of reproduction. New methods are being developed for growing carp fish planting material (intended to increase fish production in freshwater reservoirs), as well as sturgeon fish, for which methods are being developed for the formation and operation of domesticated brood herds, increasing the efficiency of reproduction.
