Abstract

The philosophy of care underpinning maternity services impacts tremendously on the way care is conceptualised, delivered and the position that women and birthing people assume in this context. The philosophy of care determines how health care systems are designed and the role of health care professionals. In this article I will explore the importance of embedding a Bio-Psycho-Social as opposed to the Medical-Industrial Philosophy of care. I will also reflect on the opportunities offered by designing maternity services which are founded on a public health ethos and address the biological, psychological and sociological needs of women, birthing people and their families.
