Abstract

The study provides a brief description of the basic concepts of the theory and its history. We considered Fermat's principle of least time, proposed to substantiate Snell's experimentally established law of refraction of light. This example can be applied as the beginning of the formation of any scientific discipline. The main purpose is to show the benefits of applying three components: experiments, bold hypotheses and mathematical models.
