The Beginning of German Biographical Research and Its Development into Sociological Research Methods

Abstract

생애사는 전통적으로 문학의 한 장르로 여겨졌으나, 역사학, 교육학 등에서 장기간 생애사가 접목되면서 오늘날 사회학적 연구방법으로 발전하였다. 미국에 정착한 폴란드 이민자의 사회 문화적 삶의 방식을 폴란드 학자들이 연구하기 시작한 후, 사회학적 연구방법으로 생애사연구가 수용되면서 생애사연구 방법은 복잡한 이론적 토대 속에서 다양하게 발전되고 있다. 연구 문제는 1920-80년대까지 독일 생애사연구의 시작과 사회학적 연구방법으로의 발전 과정을 고찰하는 데 있다. 연구 목적은 독일 문학, 역사학, 교육학에서 시작된 생애사연구가 사회학적 연구방법으로 수용되는 과정을 분석하고 생애사 연구방법의 특성을 밝히는데 있다. 연구방법은 독일 생애사연구의 시작을 문학적 측면, 역사학적 측면, 교육학적 측면으로 나누어 문헌고찰을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 1970-1980년대 생애사연구는 다양한 이론을 결합한 복잡성을 근거로 하여, 한 개인이 일상생활 속에서 겪게 되는 일련의 생애사적 고통 속에서 문제를 해결해 가는 행위력을 발휘하며 자신만의 고유한 정체성, 행위력, 경험을 통해 삶을 창출해 가는 스키마를 발견하는 유용한 연구방법으로 인정되었다. 생애사연구는”광범위한 개인적 삶의 실체와 사회적 실체를 모두 포함하는 총체적인 측면에서”(Kohli & Robert, 1984), 위기를 극복해 가는 개인의 생애사성을 새롭게 해석해 보려는 사회학적 경로분석이라 하겠다. 주체적 의식을 갖고 살아가는 사회적 행위자의 총체적인 삶을 연구하는 생애사연구 방법은 이상적 기준과 표상적 기준이란 이분법에서 벗어나 다양한 학문 간의 협력을 통해 맥락적 이해를 밝혀 새로운 사실을 도출해 가는 탐색적인 분석방법으로 발전되어야 할 것이다.The subject of this study is to explore the beginning of German biographical research and development into sociological research methods until the 1920s to 1980s. The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of biographical research in German literature, history, and pedagogy as a sociological research method and to clarify the characteristics of life history research. By the 1970-80s, biographical research was finally developed into a study that was recognized as a sociological research methodology and created its own life by exercising the socialization process of an individual in society, and the behavioral ability to solve problems, based on the complexity of combining various theories. In future biographical research paradigms, autonomy, identity, problem-solving skills, social structural backgrounds and circumstances should be intensively derived in the analysis process so that the identity of individuals or homogeneous groups can be shown and in the interview process, the oral writer should gradually re-establish his or her identity in a changing society.
