Abstract
Based on a project in Lanzhou city, Gansu province, China, the bearing and internal force characteristics of two piles of different lengths under vertical load were tested and analysed using Brillouin optical frequency-domain analysis and an anchor pile static load test. The results showed that the longer pile had higher vertical bearing capacity and greater elastic working range, but the axial forces of the long and short piles showed the same trend. It was also found that the lateral friction resistance of the soil layer around the pile plays a role earlier than the pile tip resistance, and the lateral friction resistance of the upper soil layer plays a role earlier than the lower soil layer. The increasing amplitude of lateral friction resistance in different soil layers was also found to differ. The settlement of the short pile top was mostly caused by displacement of the pile bottom and the pile tip resistance was more affected by pile tip sediments. The relationship between pile end resistance and displacement under the influence of sediments can be analysed by a threefold line model.
