Abstract
An analytical chemist's views on the practical aspects of on-line data processing in the laboratory and the solution of day-to-day laboratory problems, such as: increased sample load, greater precision and accuracy, etc., by the automated system approach are discussed. The paper focuses on the important task of reducing and interpreting sampled data from a Chromatograph. In particular, the methods of data filtering, peak detection and peak analysis are discussed. A new method for improved detection of components in very poorly resolved peak combinations is presented. The Gaussian method of complex peak analysis is found to be superior to older methods from both an accuracy and reproducibility point of view.
