Abstract

Profiles of the H α line are measured from high dispersion spectra of the cepheid β Doradus distributed throughout the cycle. These profiles are compared with theoretical profiles computed from grey model atmospheres and the agreement is satisfactory in the line wings but not in the line cores. Agreement in the line cores is obtained if line absorption in the stellar chromosphere is postulated. The chromospheric Doppler broadening of H α is consistent with that derived from K2 emission widths, using a relationship given by O. C. Wilson. The effective temperature of β Doradus, derived from the line wings, shows only a small variation with phase. The minimum effective temperature is 5900° at P = 0.58 whilst the maximum is 6350° at P = 0.83.
