Abstract
Transonic flow through a duct of variable cross section for which nonlinear resonance effects are important is considered. The complicated local interactions of nonlinear waves are resolved through asymptotic analysis and this is then used to construct a random choice method to calculate general unsteady flowfields. The method produces sharp shocks without oscillations, is accurate in smooth regions, and converges to a stable steady flow.
