Abstract
In May 1915, disaffection in Britain with the Liberal Government’s handling of the war effort forced Asquith to form a coalition with the Conservatives. This brought into the Government leading Unionists such as Bonar Law, Balfour, Curzon and Austen Chamberlain; but, for the Irish Nationalists and their American supporters, the most abhorrent appointment was that of Carson as Attorney-General. Most Irish-Americans could not understand how the man who had defied the parliamentary process by invoking open rebellion against Home Rule could now be promoted to a ministerial post. Carson’s selection was clearly a major blow to the Redmondites in America, since it appeared to confirm the extremist claim that Home Rule was an empty promise.KeywordsHome RuleMilitary AuthorityNaval BlockadeAmerican AuthorityRoman Catholic PriestThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
