Abstract

The article is devoted to the comparative analysis of Goethe's novella from the cycle "Conversations of German Refugees" with the text of a love story about a beautiful shopkeeper of Marshal Bassompierre, used by the German author as a basis for his novella. The closeness of Goethe's text to the original is noted. The changes made by J.W. Goethe in the translation of Bassompierre's memoirs, which allowed him to preserve and emphasize the novelistic nature of the story told, are analyzed.
