Abstract
This paper reports a process to optimize the acoustic characteristics of a circus (circular building) after its renovation. It is made in the “Rigas Cirks” in which shows with animals also take place. The space has a circular plan, and it is considered as a cultural monument of the state where conferences and concerts with amplified music can also take place. In this paper, the architectural acoustic design methodology to control the acoustic field according to the different possible activities inside the circus is explained, and objective parameters to identify and describe the trend of the requested sound field are indicated in detail. To guarantee an acoustic comfort for the animals, the Reverberation Time frequencies range is extended from 63 to 8000 Hz (Cairoli M., Tronchin L. The architectural and acoustic quality for theatres hosting animals. Tmrees20 Conference proceeding 2020).Large spaces with circular plans are often preferred for circuses, even though they can cause acoustical singularities such as focusing and whispering galleries. In this paper architectural acoustic design approaches and solutions to avoid the acoustic singularities and to achieve the targeted acoustic quality for a circular building for shows with animals and performing arts, including amplified music, are presented.A geometrical acoustic analysis is included as well as room acoustics procedures and implementations of computer simulation techniques are developed.
