Abstract

ABSTRACT: In any discussion of sacred tradition, polemics abound. The superficial is often confused with the theologically essential. Against such obfuscation, this essay contends that the fundamental values and rituals of an ecclesial tradition can be established empirically. This can be done by submitting the individual liturgical units of that tradition to the critical methods of liturgiology. Taking as a case study the Paschal Vigil of the extinct Jerusalem liturgy, this essay demonstrates that an archaeological approach, i.e., peeling back layers of evidence for liturgical evolution, has great value for establishing the authentic tradition of a liturgical family. The study concludes with a theological reflection on tradition and how this methodology can contribute to ongoing renewal of the Church.
