Abstract

The Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) is a specialized Arab organization established by the League of Arab States (LAS). According to its constitution, ALECSO was established to attain ‘unity of thought’ among Arab countries through education, culture, and science and to raise the cultural standard of these countries so that they may pursue, catch up with, and contribute to world civilization. As both alphabetical and cultural illiteracy constitute the major obstacle on the road to the comprehensive development of the Arab citizen, ALECSO devotes the greatest part of its adult education work to literacy work. The most prominent problem has been the failure of Arab educational systems to readjust to reality, and to become an organic natural part of the texture of the society. The development of the popular participation movement in literacy and adult education has been one of the main concerns of ALECSO.
