Abstract

This chapter discusses working of various associations and organizations created in the field of adult education in the Arab countries. The overriding concern in the field of adult education in the Arab countries today is the eradication of illiteracy. The content of the programs ranges from basic courses in reading, writing, and arithmetic through traditional subjects, to computer refresher courses and management training for business and government. Official responsibility for planning and executing adult education activities rests with the ministries of education. The Arab countries have in recent years adopted a policy of close consultation and cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture. The organizing body for such activities is the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) that enjoys the support of all 21 member states. More individuals are taking interest in adult education as a career, the universities are taking a more active role in the training of personnel, and discussions are underway proposing the development of a Regional Adult Education Association. All professional exchanges in the Arab countries have continuously emphasized the need for regional cooperation.
