Abstract

This chapter focuses on research related to adult education for employment. Estimates of expenditure for training in business and industry in the United States alone place the figure at about US$100 billion annually which is equal to the combined budgets of the nation's higher education institutions. The impact of technology and the changes it brings to the workplace have been addressed by labor-supported legislation in Norway. It assures worker rights to full information regarding the nature and potential impact of new technologies on their jobs and what investments management intends to make in that technology. Research studies to ascertain the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) have produced mixed results. Research needs for adult education for employment and the broader field of human resource development are frequently suggested by observers from both within and without the field of practice.
