Abstract
Two years ago, the National Center for Health Statistics, in recognition of the growing need for training in vital and health statistics and in response to State requests, began to plan the establishment of a practical program to provide short-term, applied statistics courses for State and local health department personnel. In July, the Applied Statistics Training Institute became a reality when the first ASTI course, an executive seminar on the capabilities and limitations of computer systems, was presented. This was followed in August by Elements of Sample Surveys. Other courses this year include Vital Records Management (September 9-20), Introduction to Demography (October 14-25), Techniques in the Measurement of (November 11-15), and Mortality Analysis (November 18-22). Reception of the program has been excellent, and favorable comments have been received from statisticians, program directors, and administrative officials.
