Abstract
Abstract This article examines a Sanskrit commentary on Śaktibhadra’s Crown Jewel of Amazement (Āścaryacūḍāmaṇiḥ) that systematically uses concepts from Mīmāṁsā to explain the “overall meaning” (tātparyam or paryavasānam) of specific passages. The anonymous author of this commentary, from early modern Kerala, describes himself as a follower of Kumārila and quotes him several times. After reviewing the model that the commentator borrows from Mīmāṁsā, where the final meaning is derived by the application of interpretive principles to the literal meaning against a discursive context, this article focuses on “additive” strategies (adhyāhāraḥ and anuṣaṅgaḥ) and “subtractive” strategies (the grahaikatvanyāyaḥ).
