Abstract

Recent developments in the method by which coastal defence and flood protection are undertaken in the UK are examined in relation to applied coastal geomorphology. The input of both fundamental and novel geomorphological techniques is advocated within the framework of coastal zone strategy studies. It is apparent that traditional geomorphology approaches should adapt to new management tools, such as geographic information systems. It is suggested that closer links should be developed between coastal geomorphologists and coastal planning authorities in order to resolve the often complex interaction of coastal processes and coastal zone management policies.
