Abstract
Common law principles and state statutes traditionally have permitted a private citizen to arrest a wrongdoer. Modern statutes, however, have expanded the citizen's arrest power to enable business operators to deal with wrongdoing on their premises. The purpose of this research is to analyze the law of citizen's arrest to determine its applicability to hospitality establishments. Statutes and cases are reviewed to discover the parameters of the citizen's arrest power and to make recommendations for management.
