Abstract
In freeze-etched preparations, epididymal adipose tissue from normal and fasted rats revealed structural differences in lipid accumulation of fat cells which were not easy to visualize. In the cleaved surface, the lipid accumulation of normal fat cells, which is encircled by a thin smooth membrane, indicated numerous globular structures in a lamellar phase. This globular appearance disappeared in fasted rats, and variable canalicular structures, arranged vertically to the surface of the lipid accumulation, were observed. A similar structural change appeared in the cleaved surface of lipid accumulation of fat cells from normal epididymal adipose tissue after incubation with epinephrine. Thus, these structural alterations in treated fat cells may be considered to correspond to biochemical and biophysical changes in lipid accumulation occurring in fat mobilization.
