Abstract
This article indicates the extensiveness of the Alternate Culture and the broad range of institutions that are being spun off. Four sources of the alternate culture are specified as broad secondary themes in contemporary American culture: women's culture, modernistic christianity, the American idola, and existentialist literature and psychology. The processes of institutionalization of alternate institutions are examined. The functional relation of the alternate culture to the larger American society is explored. Factors relating to the creation and viability of an alternate subsociety out of the diverse alternate culture institutions are analyzed.
