Abstract

The Friedel–Crafts acylation reaction is one of the oldest reactions for the preparation of ketones by carbon–carbon bond formation, and is one of the major methods used for the preparation of aromatic ketones. 1 However, acylation by an acid chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid is also applicable to nonaromatic substrates. Whilst it has been known for almost as long as its better-known relative, the aliphatic Friedel–Crafts reaction has not been used as often. Nevertheless, two reviews of early aliphatic Friedel–Crafts acylations do summarize the reaction’s history and a considerable body of information. 2,3
