Abstract

This chapter provides a brief history and chemical composition of thermoplastic polyester materials, along with typical applications to gain an appreciation for their place in the medical device industry. It discusses the advantages of using these polymers in applications subjected to harsh environments, as well as sterilization effects. Thermoplastic polyesters have proven to be a valuable player in the medical device arena. Medical device companies have incorporated their unique combination of clarity, ductility, and chemical resistance in a wide array of applications. Additionally, these polymers exhibit excellent performance under EtO and Gamma sterilization. They present some processing challenges, mainly in maintaining excellent drying and mold cooling. However, the payoff in improved part performance is well worth the effort in the manufacturing process. When designing a medical device for harsh environments, thermoplastic polyesters should be given proper consideration. The chapter covers the processing and design related issues that are to be considered while using these polymers in medical devices.
