Abstract

The article considers the activities of Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich and his spouse Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna in temple building in 1884—1907. There are such subjects in the article as the Grand Ducal pair’s management of Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society and construction of temples in the Holy Land, participation of Grand Duke and Grand Duchess in construction of temples in St.-Petersburg and Moscow. The theme of perpetuating the memory of the Grand Duke after his death is particularly explored: the activities of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna in the construction of the Cross-Monument in the Kremlin, the creation of the Temple-Burial Vault in the Chudov Monastery and the construction of the Church in name of Icon of Our Lady of Vatopedion on Khodynka Field. The author makes an attempt to show the world of spiritual life and traditions of the august personalities through the prism of their temple-building activities.
