Abstract

where the C ± X : bond may be either purely lomc or partially covalent (coord:natlon-lomc polymerization). The polymer chain grows on the add:rich of a monomer molecule to this bond. The polymerization and copolymer:zatlon kmetms, and polymer structure, should therefore depend on its nature. According to widely accepted vmws (leaving out coordinatmn-lomc polymerization) C ± X~, :.e the active centre forms an lomc pair, the anti-ion exerting a considerable influence on the kmetms of polymerlzatmn, compos~tmn of copolymers and structure of the polymer chain A number of authors [2-4] consider that under certain circumstances chain growth is at the free ions. In all cases of mltlatmn reaction, there is total or partial dlwsmn of the charges into partmles not connected with one another by a normal covalent bond. Besides this charge separatmn there may be intramolecular dlssociatmn with the formation of a bipolar mn m whmh the charged particles are combined in a covalent bond This has been found in amino acids, betames and tildes. I t seems that analogous effects may also occur m the reactmn of polymerlzatmn initiation, 1 e , H
