Abstract

Gamma-ray spectra, branching ratios and gamma-ray yields have been measured for the resonances at 936 and 1261 keV in the 27Al(p, γ)28Si reaction. Information on the decay of one of the two excited states at 6.88 MeV in 28Si is obtained. The analysis of angular correlation and distribution measurements on prominent cascades leads to spin assignments Jπ = 3− for the two resonant levels at 12.48 and 12.80 MeV excitation energy. A spin J = 2 is indicated for the 6.88 MeV excited state decaying with a strong ground state transition. The experimental evidence suggests a controversial odd parity assignment to the same 6.88 MeV state. The γ transition from the 12.80 resonant level to the first excited state of (Si28 at 1.78 MeV) shows a clear M2/E1 multipole mixing. The M2 transition strength is found to be close to the Weisskopf estimate.
