Abstract
Each of the subjects that commonly form the elementary school curriculum has a Technical Lexicon that defines the substance and structure of the subject. This paper describes research conducted by SWRL in the 1970's to identify TechLex for six subjects: communication skills, science, music, social science, mathematics, and art. These lexicons--lists of technical words compiled from K-6 textbooks-provide a comprehensive summary of the technical terminology used in elementary school instruction. This compilation was done in the 1970s. However, the defining terms of an academic subject change at the elementary school level change very little over time. Inspection indicates that a few terms might need to be added in science. It is important to note that TechLex does not define instruction, only the terms that are specific to the instruction. For example, teaching students how to estimate involves much more than the TechTerm, estimate.
