Abstract

The article depicts the course and results of the 2011 parliamentary election in Poland, presenting a brief outline of the major factors which shape political scene in Poland. It discusses the reasons for the appearance of a new party in the Polish Sejm (first time in 10 years) and its role in the Polish party system. The author argues that 2011 marks the beginning of new political cleavage in Poland, which is reflected in the evolution of the identity of two major players–PiS and PO. The former cleavage, based on the opposition modernity-tradition is to be replaced by the one referring to the question of sovereignty in relations with the EU and Russia.
