Abstract

ABSTRACT The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) has adopted a new method for classifying fixed cutter (diamond) drill bits according to their design features. Seven design traits are described by a four-character code. The code applies equally well to drill bits and core bits with natural diamond, polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC), thermally stable polycrystalline (TSP) diamond, or any other type of fixed cutter elements. Examples of typical fixed cutter bit designs are shown along with the appropriate IADC classification code. Improvements in fixed cutter bit utilization are expected through use of the new IADC classification code in conjunction with the first ever IADC dull grading standard for fixed cutter bits.
