Abstract

We present the pedagogical interest for the teaching of special relativity of the 1895 Lorentz transformations, which are a simple modification of the Galilean ones, satisfying the invariance of light velocity at first order in Since they are also the infinitesimal version of the better known but more complicated 1904 Lorentz ones, they allow us to address the main topics of this teaching (time dilatation, length contraction, relativistic dynamics, invariance of electromagnetism) and to recover standard results through simple integrations or the use of invariants. In addition, they are directly related to important historical issues, including Einstein’s 1911 relativistic approach to gravitation.
