Abstract

Marilyn W. Edmunds PhD, NP One of the perks of being an editor of a growing journal like The Journal for Nurse Practitioners (JNP) is the daily encounters I have with readers who send me e-mail. I appreciate so much the careful readers who ponder the ideas presented by authors and generate ideas of their own in response. I often end the day feeling very privileged to have so many competent, kind, and compassionate colleagues and so glad that I am a nurse practitioner (NP). As an editorial board and staff, we are really thrilled with the positive feedback that we get from our readers about the articles and columns. We get lots of suggestions for other articles and content. Overall, we have been pleased to get very few complaints. Those readers who bring our attention to errors or who make suggestions for change we try to feature in our Letter to the Editor section. We know from our authors that they frequently get lots of direct reader feedback to their articles using the author e-mails that come with each article. We believe that being able to contact authors directly about their content is the next step in enriching both reader and author experience. We are aware that at the same time that the number of NPs has grown, an austere financial market has led some advertisers to turn their support to NP/physician assistant (PA) journal combinations because the combined potential readership audience is larger and advertisers say they don’t see any difference between NP and PA content. Elsevier, JNP’s publisher, has not chosen to go in that direction and honors a commitment to support and share the NP message. Even with all the positive feedback from readers and support from the publisher, it was a risk for the JNP publisher to increase the circulation to 90,000 NPs late last year. As a result, we are enjoying a much higher audience, substantiated by new readership study by Kantar Media verifying that JNP is not only going to a broader distribution but is now the #1 NP-only journal among NP readers! This journal has been shaped by your support and encouragement. We will continue to listen to the messages that you send us. It sounds like we are on the right track!
