Abstract

The diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults has been steadily increasing over the years. GERD is often treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Studies have found upwards of 82% of PPIs are not being used following evidenced-based guidelines. The American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterology Association released updated guidelines in 2022 for the treatment of GERD and deprescribing of PPIs. It is imperative for health care providers to review the updated guidelines. This report will review the guidelines and suggest a comprehensive deprescribing PPI protocol.
