Abstract

Ultrasound is a medical imaging procedure that is commonly performed for a number of reasons. Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive medical test that can assist doctors and other healthcare practitioners to make a diagnosis and treat medical conditions. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound examinations do not use ionising radiation and, as such, there is no radiation exposure to the patient or the practitioner. This article provides an overview of this commonly performed procedure and an outline of the reasons why the test might be needed and how it is performed. The role of the healthcare assistant and the assistant practitioner (HCA and AP) in assisting the patient is also discussed.
